  • Everything You Need to Know About the Head-to-Head Game Mode

Fantasy football is evolving beyond the traditional league formats, bringing more competitive and engaging ways to play. Let’s face it Fantasy Football for a long time has been flat. Oh look everyone,  captained Salah…I bet your bottom dollar by this stage of the season pretty much every team in your league is the exact same and the leader is all but confirmed as the winner (if you’re even still actively playing). It’s February! So we’re building the future of Fantasy Football and one of the most exciting game modes offered by Statr is the Head-to-Head format which is our bread and butter. Whether you’re a seasoned fantasy football player or new to the game, in this article I will hold your hand, and guide you through everything you need to know about our Head-to-Head game mode.

What is Head-to-Head Fantasy Football?

Unlike classic fantasy football leagues where teams accumulate points over an entire season, Head-to-Head pits players against each other in direct weekly matchups. Each game week, your fantasy team will go up against another manager’s squad, and the winner is determined by who scores the most points in that round. Sounds pretty simple right? Because it is! We’ve been playing Fantasy Football for a decade now the Statr way and it’s about time we brought it to the public – watch this space! Do you want a league where it’s 38 weeks and the top dog wins, or would you rather play an NFL style regular season and playoffs with the ultimate champ at the end? Luckily when you play the Statr way, you’re league organiser (aka The Commissioner) decides. Remember, your league, your way!

How Does It Work?

  1. Draft Your Team – Like all Statr leagues, the Head-to-Head format follows a unique draft-style system, ensuring exclusive player rosters.
  2. Weekly Matchups – Each game week, you compete against another manager. Your team’s total fantasy points are compared to your opponent’s, and the highest-scoring team wins the matchup.
  3. Win-Loss Record – Instead of accumulating points across the entire season, your team’s progress is tracked by wins and losses.
  4. Playoffs & Championships – The best-performing teams with the highest win records will advance to the playoffs, where a knockout system determines the champion.

Why Play Head-to-Head?

1. Competitive & Engaging

The Head-to-Head format creates a rivalry-driven experience. You don’t just play against the entire league—you have a specific opponent each week, making every game crucial. This means strategic as well as tactical play, as alliances and rivalries between Coaches rise and fall. All the while, hell breaks loose as you attempt to trade and transfer using the open market and Coach to Coach trading.

2. Draft-Style Exclusivity

Our format ensures each team has unique players. This means no two teams will have identical star players, unlike traditional fantasy football where many managers may own the same superstars. That’s boring! Draft in style with a snake style system which keeps teams even, and honestly draft night is one of the best nights of the year. Grab the beers, pizzas and the mates for one night of football talk and team chatter until each player has their squad ready to rumble for the year. Not even going to lie, there are always some interesting picks by the 11th round, because who doesn’t get ballsy when the booze takes hold?

3. Tactical Decisions Matter

Since the outcome depends on a weekly face-off, tactical moves, substitutions, and transfers are even more important. Injuries, form, and upcoming fixtures can greatly influence decisions. We allow players 1 trade per week and 1 open market transfer per week, meaning each week you have 2 shots to fix your mistakes and sort your squad. Your key player just picked up a season long injury? Try and offload them on the unaware before the news breaks to improve your squad while ruining your mates. We do love a bit of ‘housery.

4. More Dynamic Than Classic Leagues

Rather than relying on a cumulative point system, every week is a fresh start. You could have a rough week but bounce back in the next one without being completely out of contention. You can play a classic league if your Commissioner so wishes but we love the madness of the regular season, post season model where the race to playoff is all important for a chance to win your league trophy.

5. No Game Gimmicks

Magic armbands for double points, stitched on to the same player for 35 weeks? Nope. Total do-overs mid season when you realised you followed the wrong stats? Not a chance. Defensive do-nothing subs getting clean sheets for playing a third of a match out on the wings? No way. You don’t need an assistant manager. You don’t need any magic chips that upend the game. Statr relies on strategic deal-making, tactical squad selection and having an edge over your mates when it comes to the real numbers that make up the beautiful game.

Scoring System

At Statr our scoring system rewards players based on real football actions. Unlike traditional formats that focus primarily on goals and assists, StatrDraft includes stats like:

  • Tackles and Interceptions (great for defensive players)
  • Key Passes and Assists
  • Goals and Clean Sheets
  • Saves for Goalkeepers

This unique scoring system makes every position on the field valuable, creating a more balanced and strategic game. Remember players like Rodri and Kante? Remember how they are totally pointless in standard FPL because they aren’t the goal getters? Well not here! Ballers who actually ball get rewarded and their overall actions actually mean something, more like actual football right?

Strategies for Success

  1. Balance Your Squad – Since each week presents a new matchup, having a well-rounded team with consistent performers is key.
  2. Pay Attention to Fixtures – Choosing players with favourable matchups can give you an edge.
  3. Use Transfers Wisely – Rotating in-form players while keeping your core squad stable is a winning strategy.
  4. Adapt to Injuries & Suspensions – A backup plan is crucial; always have bench options ready.

Conclusion

The Head-to-Head game mode brings a fresh and competitive twist to fantasy football. Whether you love the thrill of weekly rivalries or enjoy the strategic depth of draft-style gameplay, StatrDraft’s Head-to-Head mode provides an engaging, dynamic experience for all fantasy football enthusiasts.
