Player of the Month – January 2025

It’s a funny month for football. Often teams are left with selection headaches brought on by injuries or international tournaments, and that’s not even taking into account the absolute lunacy of the January transfer window. Four games to be played in the hangover from Christmas, and as always the best players are the ones that give it their all for 90 minutes every weekend. This January, our player of the month is…..

Four games out of four, totalling 96 with an average of 24 per game. Any player maintaining that level of output consistently would rank in the top 5 for the year when the dust settles. Now technically Phil was third overall for points behind Brentford’s Brian Mbeumo, and Justin Kluivert (spurred on in no small part by the recent Bournemouth run of good fortune). The thing that makes Foden stand out, however, is just how competitive a player has to be to gain any time on the pitch at the Etihad. Remember, this kid is in a Pep roulette regime starring De Bruyne, Silva, Doku, Grealish, Gundogan….by no means nailed on. And yet this month when given the go, he delivered in stunning fashion.

So where did all those points come from? 6 of City’s 15 goals in January, for a start. No mean feat, but he’s more than a target man (particularly given the 7 odd feet of Viking in front of him). Only the one offside, an amazing stat given his pace, attacking instincts and the weakness of the opposition’s defence. One fouls and no cards, a near-perfect disciplinary record. More than the average interceptions too, showing he’s spent plenty of time opening up chances as well as capitalising on him. Well done indeed, young man.
