Team of the Week (Game Week 7)

Team Of The Week Gameweek 7

Game week 7 is done and what a week it was: Palace’s undefeated run broken, Arsenal top of the league, Wolves picking up points when they have no business doing so, and United managing a home win over Sunderland. So amidst all the madness, let’s find out who made our team of the week for game week 7. This week saw our first 5-3-2 with an outstanding performance coming from Newcastle and Palace defenders in particular.  As well as this, the lack of firepower from the forwards saw a dip in the overall average points from last week’s dizzying 31 to a much more calm 27. Let’s see how our Jon did with his predictions for the week ahead in the game week 7 Statr team of the week:

GOALKEEPER

Pope (Newcastle) : 18

The first of the Toon trio in the team of the week, and were it not for some very tight margins it could have been four. A clean sheet (one of only three goalies to hold one this week, alongside Forest’s Matt Sels and United’s Senne Lammens) alongside four saves gave him his haul this week, with some work with the ball at his feet giving him the edge over Lammens and securing his place in goals for game week 7.

DEFENDERS

Gvardiol (Manchester City) : 28

What’s this I see? Is our old friend Pep letting Josko roam back into midfield to land attacking involvement the way he did last season again? Well…no, not quite. Sure, there’s a shot on target but the points largely came from defensive work. That said, the very notable 100 passes say that Gvardiol definitely moved into the middle as the injury-plagued Rodri limped off once again this week against Brentford. Keep an eye on this one folks.

Timber (Arsenal): 24.7

We told you, didn’t we? Every single week there’s an Arsenal back on the team of the week, with Calafiori and Magalhaes making appearances not so long ago.  Timber’s turn this time, courtesy of getting stuck right in. Tackles, aerials, and a clean sheet while still landing a couple of crosses. Not too shabby from the team that can do no wrong right now.

Van Hecke (Brighton): 31

I’ve waited seven weeks for this. A Brighton and Hove Albion player finally makes the cut this week in the form of John Paul Van Hecke. No, the result wasn’t what the doctor ordered with wins against a team like Wolves an absolute must for the seagulls if they’re to maintain their slow climb through the past 10 years. Van Hecke’s partnership with the declining Lewis Dunk represents a changing of the guard at the Amex so don’t be surprised to see him here in weeks to come.

Trippier (Newcastle): 25.5

Kieran Trippier, mainstay of premier league drafts for years now, managed to join his Newcastle team-mates Pope and Bruno in this week’s top XI.  It was a close-run thing too – just a fraction of a point lower and he’d have lost his spot to team-mate Malick Thiaw who seems intent on holding his new-found spot in Newcastle’s back line. Trippier blends experience and attacking instinct, bringing stats from almost every possible datapoint every week he plays. Injuries notwithstanding, he’s got another good season ahead.

Munoz (Crystal Palace) : 31

Joint top scoring defender this week with 31 points, Daniel Munoz was part of the late game efforts to throw the kitchen sink at Everton. Palace may not have managed to stretch their unbeaten streak thanks to a late winner from Jack Grealish (no really) , but like Arsenal, Palace have a stable of incredibly reliable fantasy assets at the back. Guehi, Munoz, Lacroix, Mitchell, Richards…it’s a selection box. And don’t think this is City or Liverpool stuff where the backs aren’t busy – Palace have the second most tackles this season, so the magic is in recovery rather than possession. The only question now is whether the loss today throws their game off.

MIDFIELDERS

Guimaraes (Newcastle) : 25

B-Gumz isn’t consistent this year, with no fewer than 6 magpies ahead of him year to date, but this week he gave us a flash of the brilliance he has on occasion brought to the pitch. An absolute master of the dark arts, Guimaraes has no fewer than 15 fould against him this season but just 2 resulting in yellow cards, so while most weeks he’s just gonig to be that guy that gets in trouble, this week he knocked in a goal to earn his spot in our team of the week.

Rice (Arsenal) : 30

Second week in a row in our team of the week, and the only man to hold his place from last week’s starting XI. Despite his nationally ambiguous past and my duty as an Irishman to never let that one go, we’re pretty complimentary about the guy because frankly he goes out and earns it every week. Set piece master at a set piece obsessed team that’s performing – could you honestly ask for more?

Caicedo(Chelsea) : 24

If you can keep your head while all about you are losing theirs, you’re probably not at Chelsea right now. Caicedo is having the sort of season his price tag two years ago demands, except this time it appears to be fixture-proof and consistent in a way we haven’t seen since his time at Brighton. This week it was a well-earned victory over Liverpool, and while Statr favourite midfielder Enzo looked shaky at times, Ecuador’s finest absolutely shone. A goal, plenty of shots on target, an absolute bucket of passes, and to top it off some defensive actions too (although few enough that we’re once again asking questions about his role as a DM).

FORWARDS

Malen (Aston Villa) : 37

The lightning strike of the GW7 team of the week, Donyell Malen – out of nowhere – was one of only two players to score a brace this week in Villa’s badly needed win over Burnley. It’s been a frankly horrible start to the season at Villa Park, for both meatspace and fantasy football. Sad to say it, but we don’t expect to see the Dutchman make the team of the week again any time soon. Still, it’s nice to see Villa make an appearance.

Semenyo (Bournemouth) : 40

A one-man wrecking crew performance from Antoine Semenyo to break the hearts of Fulham fans this week. He’s rarely out of the top 5 strikers each week and with good reason – Bournemouth look as good as they ever have, and he’s the tip of the spear. A hefty 40 points this week stemming from two goals, an assist, 3 SOT, 4 crosses, and 90 minutes of absolute nightmare fuel for the Craven Cottage defence. Nailed on, on form, grab him if you still can.
