Spurs Do a Spurs: Postecoglou Out After Ending a 17-Year Trophy Drought
Only at Spurs could you win a European trophy and get sacked in the same breath. In what can only be described as peak Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou has been shown the door a mere 16 days after guiding the club to Europa League glory and their first trophy in 17 years. Let’s not sugar-coat it, the league form was horrific, thankfully with Manchester United rolling in the muck all year spurs didn’t get half the attention their shit show of a season really was. A 17th-place finish, one point above the drop, was unforgivable in the eyes of the board. But come on. A first trophy since 2008? That should buy you at least a pre-season, since when in football is it not about winning stuff? mental if you ask me.
Reports suggest a fractured dressing room, with senior players losing faith in Ange’s high-risk, high-line philosophy. Some called it brave, others called it naive. Other say the dressing room will revolt against Daniel Levy and that the dressing room was firmly in Big Ange’s corner. The truth will come out in the wash it always does.Either way the Aussie’s North London adventure is over.
Roy Keane didn’t hold back, calling the sacking “a joke.” And Robbie Slater, one of Postecoglou’s fiercest defenders, reckons it could trigger a full-on summer exodus.
So, what next? More importantly for us fantasy nerds…how does this affect our 2025/26 draft board prep… in the words of footballs most famous tap-in artist, “here we go!”
Five In The Frame: Who’s Topping the Levy List?
We’ve dug into the front-runners, their tactical identity, and what it all means for FPL value. Welcome to your early scouting guide.

1. Thomas Frank – The Tactical Therapist
Currently the bookies’ favourite and if we are being honest we can see why given the stellar work he has done at Brentford. Spurs want stability, and Frank has it in buckets. He’s turned Brentford into a mid-table mainstay on a shoestring. The thing is, this has a bang of Nuno 2.0 about it, sack Jose getting you to a final to replace him with a manager from a lesser team whose done top work to sack them by November, only this time Franky boy is replacing the guy who actually brought silverware to Tottenham, see you in the dole office at Christmas Thomas.
Tactical Style: 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 with structured pressing, intelligent zonal shape, and set-piece prowess.
Fantasy Impact:
- ✅ One to Watch: Pape Matar Sarr – Has all the attributes to be Frank’s midfield workhorse. Think Christian Norgaard with a higher ceiling.
- ❌ Avoid: Yves Bissouma – Risk of being squeezed out by tactical rigidity and competition for that pivot role. Pedro Porro is another to avoid, without being 60 yards up the pitch in Big Ange’s all out attack system, expect lower returns than the last 2 years from the whippy fullyback.
If Frank gets the job, think compact, think defensive returns. Spurs might stop being a meme defensively.

2. Marco Silva – The Tactical Balancer
Silva is a steady hand. His Fulham side played some great football without ever going full kamikaze. One of the most under appreciated managers of one of the most under appreciated teams in the Premier League, Levy would be wise to consider Marco Silva. Last summer he rejected a big money switch to Saudi, but they are back again and his name is also in a list of potentials for the next boss of Juventus. His sides tend to know exactly what they’re doing, and that’s something Spurs sorely need.
Tactical Style: Stable 4-3-3, solid defensively, emphasis on width and link-up play.
Fantasy Impact:
- ✅ One to Watch: Brennan Johnson – His pace and directness fits Silva’s winger profiles perfectly. Doubling down on Porro is also a wise move and Antonee Robinson would be high up his hitlist for a summer switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
- ❌ Avoid: James Maddison – Could get exposed unless paired with a no-nonsense partner, think Andreas Periera and Emile Smith Rowe, 2 guys worth their weight in gold but both shown the bench at times this year for not putting in the shift.
Silva’s system suits wide forwards and smart fullbacks. Think marginal gains, not fantasy fireworks.
3. Oliver Glasner – The Control Freak
Replacing one trophy winning manager with another, well that doesn’t feel Spursy at all.. so this is all probably just a bit of smoke and mirrors for Ollie to get a fresh contract. Now off a Palace miracle, Glasner is tactical concrete. If Spurs want a defensive foundation, this is their guy. Just don’t expect goal-fests.
Tactical Style: Disciplined 3-4-2-1 with rigid structure, zonal pressing, and aerial threat from set-pieces.
Fantasy Impact:
- ✅ One to Watch: Destiny Udogie – Wingbacks thrive under Glasner; bonus if he starts popping up in the box.
- ❌ Avoid: Richarlison – Could find himself benched or isolated up top.
This is your clean-sheet candidate. He’d turn Spurs into a defensive double-up darling.

4. Andoni Iraola – The Chaos Conductor
He’s a risk. But boy, is he entertaining. If Levy wants Ange-lite with better balance, Iraola is a compelling option. Honestly we are surprised given Bournemouths season he isn’t higher up the hitlist.
Tactical Style: Aggressive high press, vertical build-up, transitional madness. Think organised chaos.
Fantasy Impact:
- ✅ One to Watch: Dejan Kulusevski – Press-resistant, technical, and loves broken-play scenarios.
- ❌ Avoid: Vicario – Will face a barrage of shots behind that press.
Expect goals. Both ways. Could make Spurs a goldmine for attackers—and a graveyard for goalkeepers.
5. Roberto De Zerbi – The Chess Master
Still technically at Marseille, but always linked to bigger gigs. De Zerbi’s style is sophisticated, demanding, and totally transformational.
Tactical Style: Heavy-possession, inverted fullbacks, deep build-up with risk-reward sequences.
Fantasy Impact:
- ✅ One to Watch: James Maddison – Will become the metronome of De Zerbi’s side.
@wearetheoverlap “Some front on the geezer!” 😳 Over to you, James Maddison! 🫡 #Spurs #Jamesmaddison #roryjennings #chelsea #europaleague #funnyvideos #fyp #theoverlap
- ❌ Avoid: Christian Romero – Outpaced and out-thought in this system.
If he lands, Spurs go from chaos to control overnight. Maddison becomes a must-own.
Final Word
The Ange era was bold, brash, and ended with silverware something no other Spurs boss has managed in 17 years. But as we say in fantasy: form is temporary, system is everything.
Whoever walks through that door next isn’t just shaping Spurs’ future, they’re reshaping our fantasy draft boards. You’ve got two jobs this summer:
- Track the next manager.
- Track how that manager uses midfielders and wingbacks.
That’s your cheat code. Do that, and you’re not just playing fantasy—you’re playing it the Statr Way
